2004 Rice Regional MVP

PDF version

Cliff Pennington is arguably the best shortstop to ever come through College Station and has been the best player I've seen here during my 5 baseball seasons. He didn't start in the season opener against Rice in his freshman season but he started in game two and really didn't take a look backwards. He went on to be named the Big XII Freshman of the Year & was named second team All-Big XII at third base....not bad for a kid playing 3B for the first time. He finished the season with a flair hitting .383 over our last eleven games which included the texas series, the Big XII Championship Tournament, and our Regional games.

Cliff didn't slow down one bit in his sophomore season. He made the transition from 3B to SS and was named to the second team All-Big XII again.

No one makes the play from deep in the hole better

Cliff was also able to show some range at his new position and made some spectacular plays that will likely go down in Aggie-lore. Cliff continued his excellence in crunch time hitting .409 over the team's last 11 games which included the texas series, the Big XII Tournament, the Rice Regional, & the LSU Super Regional. He was named the MVP of the Rice Regional going 10-for-16 (.625) with 8 runs, 5 RBIs and 3 stolen bases in the four game tournament.

When Cliff joined the Falmouth Commodores up in the Cape Cod League for his 2004 summer they were 0-5 on the season. He led them, as their starting shortstop & 3-hole hitter, all the way into the playoffs and into the championship series. He injured his wrist in the middle of the semi-final play-off game (they won the game) but without Cliff in the lineup the Commodores dropped the championship series in two games. He finished his summer leading the Cape in stolen bases with 21. For his spectacular summer performance, Cliff was named the #9 prospect in the Cape Cod league, given the league's Manny Robello Award (10th Man), and named to the league's All-Star team.

2005 was a bitter-sweet season for Cliff and the Ags. Cliff lived up to all the expectations piled upon him and was the heart and soul of the team but he alone was not enough and the Ags suffered through a rough season. Cliff lead the squad in virtually every single offensive catagory....batting average, slugging percentage, on-base percentage, runs, hits, doubles, triples, home runs, RBIs, total bases, walks, stolen bases, games played, & games started. Just think of what his numbers would look like if he still had a Cory Patton or a Scott Beerer hitting behind him again. Not only did his offense impress everyone but his defense continued to improve and he more than halved the number of errors he made in 2004 (27 down to 12). For the third consecutive season Cliff contributed everything he had into the late season push hitting .458 (22-for-48) over the team's last 14 games (including 6 games against Top 10 opponents) with 3 doubles, a triple, a home run, and 13 stolen bases.

I can't say it enough times but I'll try to....we're going to miss seeing Cliff sprint onto the field to Metallica's Master of Puppets and I doubt any Olsen Field faithful will ever hear Switchfoot's Meant to Live without imagining #5 digging into the batter's box.

I want to wish Cliff the best of luck as he takes the next step forward in his career and thank him for all the memories.
