Ag Football Recap: Ags 38 v. Arky 42

We walked out of the stadium on Saturday and there was no speaking. We were completely stunned.

How on earth can a team, in back-to-back weeks, blow a 17 point halftime lead and then an 18 point halftime lead.

We had the football world right where we wanted....where we had dreamed for it to be. It was a Top 20 matchup - another big game - and we were in the process of rolling up our opponent (a future SEC rival) and we blew it - AGAIN.

ARRRRGGGGGHHHHHH.

We can't quite take advantage of momentum.

The weekend itself was fun. Jennifer and I drove up Friday night with the kids after I got off work. Saturday morning Jennifer dropped me off at her Dad's house and they went to the State Fair and we went to the game, where we met up with my brother, my dad, and my brother-in-law. After the game we met back up with the Fair group for dinner and had an evening at GrandAggie's place.

Our running game was outstanding. It was probably the best rushing performance I've ever seen from us....the '06 Nebraska game where J-Train and McGee each ran for 130+ is the only other game I can think of that would be in the conversation.

Christine Michael led the way with 230 yards and 3 TDs. He was like a man amongst boys. It was the most rushing yardage by a single player since Darren Lewis put up 232 back in 1990 against tech....tied for 3rd most in school history. And he did it on only 32 carries (7.2 ypc).

He's probably my favorite running back to watch since I got to school. He runs with such passion and strength. J-Train was lots of fun to watch in short yardage situations but C-Mike has him beat when it comes to doing it from anywhere on the field.

Not only did C-Mike run all over the Hogs but Cyrus added 95 yards and 2 TDs and Tannehill tacked on 56 more.

Everytime C-Mike or Cyrus scored I turned to Sean and said, "C-Mike/Cyrus did it for your birthday." Because it was Sean's birthday. I feel like I said it a lot during that first half.

We went into half-time with a 35-17 lead and I told Sean, "The winner of this game is going to have more than 35 points. We're either going to put up 70 or finish with 35."

The frustrating thing was that I was pretty close to being right. We scored 3 points in the second half, including a highly scrutinized FG late in the game. The game was tied with 4:22 remaining after Arky had marched back with 18 unanswered points and we had the ball in a 4th & 2 on their 6 yard line. I turned to my father-in-law and said something along the lines of, "Wow, he thinks we're going to stop them." (referring to Sherman). I then turned to my brother and moaned, "We're not even going to have enough time to get back down field and score after they score."

Arkansas marched down the field and scored a TD and we got the ball back with a little under 2 minutes remaining - which actually was enough time, we just couldn't move the ball.

I understand that Sherman plays a conservative style and that his background in the NFL is much more of a play it by-the-book approach but in college football you're dealing with 18-22 year old kids who can unravel when things go wrong. The ones that don't and are able to rise to the occasion are the ones that go onto the next level where you can have a more by-the-book approach.

How did Arkansas manage to mount this sort of comeback? They threw the pigskin off the ball. 510 yards passing.

Now the two things that I find interesting is that they actually threw for more yards in the first half when we were romping them than they did in the second half when they mounted their comeback (271 in 1st H and 239 in 2nd H). Their leading receiver, Jarius Wright, had a school record 281 yards and 2 TDs....but he only had 54 of those yards in the second half.

The difference was that the offense stalled out in the second half. It wasn't that Arkasnas wasn't scoring in the first half, they were, it was that we were just tacking on points faster.

We did have two turnovers. Tannehill threw an INT in the first half that led to Arkansas's first TD drive of the game and C-Mike fumbled a ball. We are not getting turnovers - we are -5 on the season and haven't forced one since the first quarter of the SMU game (excluding the oSu Blackmon self-inflicted fumble into the endzone for a touchback). Even with that gimmie fumble we are 112th in the nation in turnover margin. That has to change.

Lots of people pointed to the C-Mike fumble as the turning point in the game but I'm not completely sure it was because our defense came out and forced the only 3-and-out of the second half and got the ball back. I think that the turning point came on our drive following the 3-and-out:
1-10 C-Mike ran for 5
2-5 C-Mike ran for 10
1-10 Cyrus ran for 7
2-3 Cyrus ran for 11
1-10 Cyrus ran for 10 (called back on a illegal block)
1-15 Pass to Fuller for 9
2-6 C-Mike ran for 2

That illegal block killed what was looking to be a MONSTER drive. A backbreaking drive.

Jeff Fuller is playing on a bad hamstring and as a result our passing game has looked pretty weak - particularly down field. Ryan Swope had the play of the game (and long pass of the game) when he leapt over a diving defender and picked up major YAC but beyond that I don't think we had a single pass go for more than 15 yards.

Somehow, amidst the roller coaster of emotion, Sean and I noticed that Arkansas's players all seemed to have some sort of abdominal bleeding.

What a horrible uniform design.

What is happening? I'm not sure. I don't think we're getting enough pressure without having to blitz an outside linebacker or a defensive back. Dustin Harris and Terrence Fredricks each had a sack and Sean Porter had two. On the season we have 18 sacks but 10 of those are from CBs and Porter.

I don't think it is our defensive backs that are the problem - we returned everyone from last season. It has to be our DL and our LB corps (particularly the inside LBers).

Even with our 112th ranked turnover margin and our 120th ranked pass defense - we lost to the current #6 and #10 teams by a combined total of 5 points. It's amazing to me how slim the margin is. If we fall on that Arkansas fumble in the endzone 1/10th of a second faster than we did they don't score that TD and we probably win the ballgame and we're riding high as the 10th or 11th ranked team in the country. We didn't - and it's the end of the world and we're just hanging onto a #25 ranking.

It's a funny game. A game of inches. And emotion.

2004 Aggie Football Season Preview

Welcome to TAMABINPO's 2004 Aggie Football Preview. For those of you who are first time visitors, you can check out My Bio and the Archives to see what you've been missing....and for those of you who are part of my loyal readers....thanks for your continual support.

If you didn't pick it up from the name of the website, baseball is one of my main focuses but really anything Aggie related flies here (namely sports).

Prior to my first semester here at A&M I had seen a total of 2 Aggie football games (the '99 t.u. game and then the '99 Alamo Bowl v. Penn State). I really didn't follow college football until that point but I feel as if I've learned quite a bit about it in my first 4 years here at A&M....so much in fact that I'm sticking around for a victory lap and another football season.

I haven't missed a home game since I started school here (plus a road trip to Nebraska) and I saw every road game last season thanks to the old television. I do need to warn you that while I have become obsessed with the college game, I don't know a whole bunch about the finer points of football so if nothing else I'll be giving you my best analysis from one Aggie fan's stand point. In other words, I am not a professional scout or a team reporter but I, like thousands of other Aggies, live and die with Aggie football each and every Saturday (and in some cases Thursday nights).

Most of you know that last season there was a lot more dying than there was living. A 4-8 record (2-6 in Big XII) will do that to ya. Something that a lot of people seem to overlook is the fact that we had an incredibly difficult schedule last season. In fact, it was so difficult that it was ranked the 4th most difficult in all of DI football according to the NCAA (link). That leads me to believe that we've been a bit harsh on ourselves.

This season we don't have a cakewalk schedule by any means, but it does seem to be a bit less harsh than last season....Plus we get to play 3 of our 4 biggest games at Kyle Field (and we don't have to travel to tech, who seem to have our number in Lubbock).

Both Kirk Herbstreit and Lee Corso (of ESPN College Gameday) have us picked as their sleeper picks in the Big XII.

Those are last season's stats and as you can tell, we just couldn't put points up on the board which is rough especially considering how many points our defense gave up.

Dustin Long has a nice strike through his name because he's not with us anymore. I wish him the best of luck at Sam Houston as he steps into their program to finish up his collegiate career.

Aggie fans across the nation hope that Reggie McNeal finally becomes the complete package that he was advertised as when he came to A&M as one of our greatest recruits ever. Thus far in his career he has been extremely inconsistent, with the high being his freshman season upset over #1 Oklahoma. This past January 9th, Reggie underwent shoulder surgery on throwing arm to repair some torn cartilage. He has been cleared to play and he is said to be 100% going into Thursday but it's definitely something to keep an eye on as the season gets under way.

I've always thought that Reggie has tremendous potential but he hasn't put it all together after his first 2 seasons. He has had a tendency in the past to throw behind receivers or even hit them in the back of the helmet, so hopefully during his injury down time he's been able to work on his timing and reading the defense. Coach Fran has said good things about his progress mentally, but I can't imagine a coach saying the opposite about his starting QB.

On the other hand, Reggie is definitely one of our guys that I would classify as a "playmaker". I think that in order for us to win we have our playmakers get as many touches with the football as possible because anything can happen when they're involved (I'll identify the rest of them as we go on)

Looking over the rest of our QB options....Branyon doesn't have too much experience (as in 2 passing attempts) and the other 3 QBs on the depth chart are true freshman, Stephen McGee and Jordan Chambless (who is a big baseball recruit) and red-shirt freshman T.J. Sanders.

Receiving

I think that our receiving corps has the potential to be very good.

graduated or transferred out

Let's start off with my favorite player, Terrence Murphy (T-Murph to TAMABINPO regulars). He already owns the school record for career receiving yards and is 2 receptions away from solely owning the school's career receptions record....and he's still got his entire senior season ahead of him. He is one of our "playmakers". Enough said.

Our other WRs are mainly unproven. The two seniors, Jason Carter and Terrence Thomas are the most experienced but still haven't been big contributors yet. Thomas has had 5 career starts and has a total of 32 career receptions for 356 yards and 2 TDs.

Carter is somewhat of a different story.

He came to A&M as a big QB recruit but got caught in a numbers game at that position. Last year he was poised for a monster season after having the A-Back position added to the offense for him, but he didn't get many touches once the season actually started. In fact he only had 7 carries (128 yards or 18.3 yards-per-carry) and had 12 receptions for a total of 162 yards (or 13.5 yards-per-catch).

I've always considered Jason one of our "playmakers" and I feel that if we can get him into the mix offensively more often we can expect big things out of him.

The rest of the receivers include Juco transfer, DeQawn Mobley, Earvin Taylor (SO.), L'Tydrick Riley (Jr.), Chad Schroeder (SO.), and Jesse Woods (Jr.). Those guys have a combined total of 27 receptions for 399 yards and 3 TDs.

Special Teams

This was a weak spot and a bright spot for the Aggies in 2003 depending on what aspect you were looking at.

Our kick returning was spectacular, led by my boy T-Murph finishing the season averaging 27.2 yards-per-return. He was named the All-Big XII Kick Returner and he is a pre-season All-American at the position this year.

Hopefully he won't have the opportunity to break his own school record for the number of kickoff returns in a season because our defense shouldn't be giving up as many TDs this year.

T-Murph will be joined by DeQwan Mobley on kick-offs but I wouldn't be surprised to see Jason Carter back there at some point during the season.

While our kick returning was spectacular our punt returning flat out STUNK. We finished 110th in the nation in punt return average (out of 117 teams) and I can't even begin to count how many times we fumbled the ball on punts. I suppose I can begin to count and I'm thinking somewhere around 8 or 9 times with us recovering the fumble about 3 or 4 of those times. It was a killer and it got to the point where I was simply hoping for just clean catch and no return.

T-Murph has been granted the punt return job after not taking any last season with Japhus Brown (RS-F) and Erik Mayes (RS-F) listed under him on the depth chart. I wouldn't be shocked if you see Jason Carter taking one every now-and-then either if there is any inconsistency with the others.

Todd Pegram will be our kicker again this year after having a solid season in his Sophomore season (last year). He hit 17-of-22 (77.3%) after a very rough freshman season (12-of-21; 57%). He is excellent inside the 30 yard marker but doesn't seem able to hit the long shots (season long was 42 yds last year). It is interesting to note that while his FG% rose dramatically last year it might have been because he was used from deep much more often in 2002. Only 12 of his 21 FGAs were from inside the 40 yard line (and he was 75% inside the 40-yd line).

Alright, we're back for the rest of the preview....our rushing game and my thoughts on the 2004 Wrecking Crew.

Yesterday we discussed the passing, receiving and special teams of our team and discovered that there is some definite hope but still a couple of unproven or unfulfilled potentials that will be big factors in our game.

We lost Derek Farmer this off-season when he followed Dustin Long to Sam Houston and the other guys scratched out graduated and Blake Kendrick is one of our linebackers who took some rushes during the Baylor blowout when he was our 12th man.

The reason we lost Derek Farmer, who was a good tailback for us, is because Courtney Lewis had a Freshman All-American season.

C-Lew had 5 separate 100-yd rushing games and led the team in TDs scored with 12.

Unfortunately, losing Farmer really hurts our depth at the tailback position....mainly because last week we found out that our red-shirt freshman Derek Brown went ahead and enrolled this semester at a Junior college. Coach Fran explained the reason pretty ambiguously...."He’s going to take some time to get everything in line, academics and his life, and things like that."

Due to the loss of Mr. Brown our backup RB is listed as Will Adams on the depth chart. Will was a squads man last season and doesn't have any sort of statistics for me to show you. I've read elsewhere that we might move red-shirt freshman Chris Alexander (who I've heard great things about as a full back) a step further back in the formation if need be.

Fullback is manned by Keith "Chief" Joseph. Chief didn't get too many carries last year but man he's a beast. The guy is one of those huge guys that just look like a football player....and if the video game NCAA Football 2005 is any indicator, Chief is going to be a total stud on the field.

Now I'm going to mention the O-Line, even though it does affect the passing game and I've already spoken on that.

We have several linemen returning from last season including one, Jami Hightower, who red shirted due to a foot injury last year. The rest of the returnees are Geoff Hangartner, Aldo de la Garza (the Texas A&M bench press record holder at 490 lbs), and one of the coolest guys you'll ever meet...Dominique Streamer. The coaching staff says that the linemen are all stronger and faster than they were in 2003 after spending a tremendous amount of time focusing on those aspects of their game during the off-season.

We were very poor defensively last year as you can see. Only 2 teams in the nation gave up more points per game than we did and only 5 teams were worse against the run.....and 96th in total defense isn't too good either.

There was all sorts of talk about whether the defense should even be called the Wrecking Crew, and regardless of what you think about the name they definitely didn't look like the Wrecking Crews of the past.

I read somewhere that at some point in time last year we had 4 walk-ons in our 8 linebacker rotation. That was obviously one of areas of focus this off-season and we went after a couple of Juco players to fill the gaps (Aaron Brown, Lee Foliaki, and Renuel Greene) until all of our young sophomores and red-shirted freshmen become full out starters.

We lost one of those youngsters this off-season when sophomore-to-be TaTa Thompson walked away from football and school for personal reasons. TaTa not only had a cool name to say, but this guy was almost a full helmet taller than anyone else on the field.

One of the young guys that I think will end up being an extremely good LBer is Justin Warren.

I don't really know what it is about him but I just have a good feeling about him.

From what I've read we've moved former safety, Keelan Jackson into the LB rotation to increase the speed we seemed to lack there last year. Keelan had great games in the '02 v. OU and texas tech but had some injury troubles to overcome last season.

On the D-Line we've got some youth, but they're very highly touted. Red-shirt freshmen Jason Jack (DE) and Red Bryant (NT) are two of the big recruits from 2 years ago and they've earned the starting spots on the line over our 2003 incumbents during their red-shirt season and this off-season. Sparkplug Mike Montgomery has taken a starting spot over at the other DE position and our best tackling lineman from 2003, Johnny Jolly, will start in the DT position.

I don't think you can start looking at our cornerbacks and safeties without mentioning Jaxson Appel first. Jaxson, only a sophomore at the time, led the team in tackles last year....AS A DEFENSIVE BACK. He also had four of our defense's 6 interceptions on the season. He is a Pre-season All Big XII player and should be the heart and soul of our defense, just as he was last year.

I'm not sure where I read it, but Jaxson said something about the entire defense that I liked to hear. He said that everyone called them slow last year (I was definitely one of those accusers) but it wasn't necessarily speed, but slight hesitations made by the players because of the new defensive schemes after moving away from the 3-4 D that R.C. ran. I sure hope this is the case!

Elsewhere we've got Byron Jones (Sr.), Jonte Buhl, Ronald Jones (Jr.) and Melvin Bullitt (So.), and Erik Mayes (RS-F) slated as our starters.

I need to take this time to re-mention an old friend of mine, Evan Carthey. E walked onto the squad in the spring of our junior year after not playing a snap since his senior year of HS and made the practice squad last season. He was able to dress for several of the home games which was awesome.

Well Evan has now cracked into the depth chart listed as a right cornerback. Evan and I go waaaay back to 1st grade and have played everything from soccer to baseball to basketball together. Keep your eyes out for #5 on defense or on kick-offs and give him a nice big WHOOP! if you see him get into the action.

Team MVPs

When I looked back at my pre-season team MVPs the other day, I was shocked to read what I had written.

On Offense, I'm going with Jason Carter, but barely over T-Murph. On D-fense, I'm sticking with Jaxson Appel.
I was a "barely" away from nailing the MVPs that were voted on by the team after the season. That's not too bad.

This year I'm going to go with my boy, T-Murph, simply because he's awesome and he's my favorite. On defense I would say Jaxson Appel again, but I don't think he's going to have the numbers that he did last year because he's going to get some help from a few other guys this year. I'm going to go out on a limb and buy into the hype of the red-shirt freshmen on the D-Line. I'll say Jason Jack. I don't really know why, but I just have a great feeling about this guy.

WHOOP! Less than 36 hours after the announcement!

First of all I just want to say that back in August, coming off a more than miserable 4-8 season, I knew that we were going to be a much better team but I had no idea that we would end up where we are today. I give all the credit to Coach Fran and his staff for not only motivating our young men to play together as a team but for sticking to their "big picture" plan and not bowing to all the Sunday morning quarterbacks that seem to be so much more prevalent in this the internet/AM radio-age where everyone has an opinion (I'm guilty myself).

In my 2004 Aggie Football Season Preview I mentioned that both Kirk Herbstreit and Lee Corso picked Texas A&M as their sleeper team in the Big XII. I knew they were on TV for a reason.

After last season I wanted nothing more than to go to a bowl game within traveling distance. I was dreaming of the Alamo Bowl so you can only imagine my excitement of getting a bid from the Cotton Bowl.

Before you get to thinking that I'm just happy to be going and that the score doesn't matter I should tell you that I don't think that....I think that the #20 Ags are just as good as #15 Tennessee is and that we've got everything going our way.

UT just played in the SEC Championship game against a great Auburn team and came up short. I can imagine a little disappointment in playing in the Cotton Bowl when they had the opportunity to be playing in the BCS. If Tennessee overlooks us they will without a doubt lose.

The Vols had the misfortune of running into Auburn twice while the Ags had the misfortune of playing Utah before anyone knew about Utah. A&M has 3 BCS teams on their schedule which accounted for 3 of the 4 L's (and to think that we played Pitt, Utah, V-Tech, texas & OU all last year). The Baylor loss was a total embarrassment but it was one of those things that was bound to happen one of these years simply due to the laws of probability (hadn't lost to them since 1985) and credit goes out to their head coach for going for the two-point conversion to win it. We all learned our lesson about looking ahead on our schedule before playing the current week's game (we had #2 OU at Kyle Field the following week and ESPN's College Game Day was packed and ready to roll into Aggieland for the first time since 2000).

The Vols, like the Aggies, won some very close games....beat Florida with 00:06 FG, & drove on Ole Miss in last 6 minutes for game winning TD Tennessee had a close call with SEC perennial doormat, Vanderbilt, but was able to hold off the Commodore's 4th quarter offense to 13 points.

Tennessee has a very good rushing game. Their two-headed monster of Gerald Riggs Jr. and Cedric Houston could very well both finish the season with both of them as 1,000 yard rushers (Riggs has 1,005 & Houston has 943 yards). As a team they've rushed for >200 yards 6 times on the season with a high of 347 against Louisiana Tech. I imagine they would have added to that number of games had they not had to play Auburn (twice), Georgia & Alabama who are all ranked in the top 30 in the NCAA against the rush.

The QB game is a total mess for Tennessee. I'm not exactly sure yet what is going on there but they have three QBs in the mix, with two who have a significant amount more playing time.

Rick Clausen, the younger brother of Casey Clausen, has started the last 3 games for the Vols so I would imagine he'll be getting the call in Dallas.

Those three QBs have done an excellent job spreading the ball around....they have 5 receivers with >250 yards receiving and 4 of those have >20 receptions.

All of those guys are WRs so I'm going to make the assumption that they don't use their tight ends or running backs very much in the passing game.

As for the Ags we're very, very young on defense.

Our defensive line consists of 2 red shirt freshmen, Jason Jack & Red Bryant (both Rivals.com Freshmen All-Americans), Mike Montgomery (first team All-Big XII), and big Johnny Jolly. Our traditionally NFL-level linebackers have taken a hit over the last few years but have been improved by recent standards by a couple of Juco transfers (Lee Foliaki and Renuel Greene) and youngsters growing up (Justin Warren & Archie McDaniel). Our defensive backs are our most experienced group but probably our biggest liability. Free safety, Jaxson Appel, is leading the team in tackles for the second season in a row...in fact 4 of our top 5 tacklers are defensive backs. Our corners Jonte Buhl and Byron Jones are both seniors and have 68 and 61 tackles each, respectively. Jones is a great tackler but seems to get turned around a bit when the ball is in the air (he's a great gunner for our special teams). Our other backs are strong safety, Japhus Brown (another member of the Rivals.com Freshmen All-American team) and red shirt freshman Erik Mayes at CB.

We have played against some of the better running backs in the nation (4 of the top 11 backs; Peterson, Benson, Morency, & Sproles) and only one of them was even within 30 yards of his season average.

Aggie Football Preview: Cotton Bowl Part II

I thought that today would be a good day to run through some non-X&O type stuff....like some history, etc.

This is Texas A&M's 11th Cotton Bowl appearance and it's first since 1998 when we took on UCLA. It is our first bowl game since the 2001 Galleryfurniture.com Bowl and the 28th in school history. We did not accept a 2002 invitation and in 2003 we were not eligible.

As for the Volunteers, this will be their 6th Cotton Bowl appearance and their first since 2000 against Kansas State. It is their 16th consecutive bowl game and will be their 45th bowl ever, placing them in second place all-time behind Alabama's 51.

The last time these two teams faced each other was in the 1957 Gator Bowl which just so happened to be Coach Bear Bryant's last game in an A&M uniform as well as the last game for A&M's lone Heisman winner, John David Crow, who won the award in that 1957 season. We lost that game 3-0 on a 17-yard FG with less than 5 min remaining in the game.

As for this year's game, the Cotton Bowl ticket office has sold out of tickets as did the Texas A&M ticket office. The only way to currently purchase tickets without going through a third party is to contact Tennessee's ticket office or pull tickets on Thursday (for students only)....but good luck. Here is what it looks like outside of Kyle Field (even after 2 nasty thunderstorms)....

They've been there since Sunday night so I wouldn't go stomping through there because they're likely to be a tad bit cranky.

I do need to make a couple of corrections/additions to my Part I Preview.

After having some chat room discussions with some Tennessee fans (the folks over at Vols to the Wall were the most helpful) I have learned that UT is down to their third string QB with Clausen. They started the season with both Erik Ainge and Brent Schaeffer splitting duties at the QB positions (both as true freshmen) similar to what we did with Reggie and Dustin Long in previous years. Unfortunately, Schaeffer went down with a broken collarbone during the South Carolina game and then the following weekend, against Notre Dame, Ainge was injured with what was explained to me as being "a level 3 sublaxation of the shoulder". This is what led Clausen to seeing so much game time (he's been the QB ever since Ainge came out against ND).

I have read that both should be available for the game and I have read that both will miss the game....I'm going to leave it to that.

There have also been some rumors that Schaeffer has been missing class and hasn't had the best attitude (there is another rumor circulating that he might be considering transferring)....all of that is rumor and there is no factual basis to it at this point.

No team in the nation had more players on either list than Texas A&M. WHOOP! Red Bryant was named the Big XII Defensive Freshman of the Year by The Sporting News & Erik Ainge was named the SEC Offensive Freshman of the Year.

The more I read about the two teams the more similarities I find between them. The biggest difference is that UT went 1-2 against Top 5 teams and we went 0-3.

PSHEW. The last portion of my preview....this has become a bit taxing on me because I didn't intend to make it so dog-on long....but I did it to myself cause I love it.

Ok. Let's start with Tennessee's defense. They are much better against the run compared to the pass. Some of that might be due to the fact that the best running team UT faced all year was Louisiana Tech who is ranked 20th in the nation in rushing. The only other team they have faced in the Top 40 teams in rushing is Auburn who is ranked #25 (they faced'em twice). A&M is ranked #37 and therefore will be the 3rd best rushing team they've faced (going back to my analysis on A&M's Defense....we have faced 4 of the top 16 rushing teams).

From what I've gathered from chat rooms (another good Vol website is VolTalk) is that their base defense is a 4-3-4 and they run a Mustang package where they line up 4-2-5. I've been told that they blitz about 15-20% of the time (but after seeing us against texas they might bump that up a bit).

Their passing defense is suspect, as is A&M's. I should point out, as I did with the rushing, that the best passing teams they faced was Florida (whom they beat) who is ranked 13th in the nation in passing, Georgia (29th; they beat them too), and Auburn (35th). As you can see, A&M is the 20th best passing team in the land which would make us the 2nd best passing team UT will have faced.

I told you guys yesterday about their good, young cornerbacks Jonathan Hefney and Roshaun Fellows (both Freshmen All-Americans) and FS Josh Allen who was named to the All-SEC team and led the conference in tackles.

Other good defensive players are DT Jesse Mahelona and DE Parys Haralson who, with his 7 sacks, Reggie might want to watch out for.

Finally, I think I need to point out that fewest point given up by the Vols over the last 3 games is 31 points.

Now onto something that I am much, much more familiar with....the Aggie offense.

We are led by our fearless QB, Reggie McNeal, who sits behind only 5 other players in the nation in total offense (he's 6th with 296 yards/game).

I have written about Reggie's assault on the A&M record book previously, but I'll briefly recap it....Reggie is 1 passing yard short of the school's single season record and he already owns the school record for rushing yards by a QB.

Our running game is led by Courtney Lewis who was a 1,000 yard rusher in 2003 as a freshman. I'm haven't had the feeling that C-Lew has been completely healthy this year, which combined with our new found love for throwing the ball around has taken an awful lot of carries away from him. He has 748 yards & 9 TDs on 169 carries this year.

Our receiving corps is one of our strong points, as it is for Tennessee. We have 6 players with >200 yards receiving but only 2 with >20 receptions.

T-Murph is not only our obvious go-to-guy but he's my favorite player. Had he not missed 1/2 of the Wyoming game and the entire Clemson game due to injury he would have ~780 yards which would put him within 100 yards of the single season receiving yards record here at A&M (with one game to go). He already owns the career receiving yards record and career receptions record.

Jason Carter is an interesting story. He was recruited as a blue chip QB but got caught up in a numbers game at the position so we have moved him around on the field simply to get his athleticism into action. He doesn't have the best hands but he is one of our playmakers.

Kerry Franks is a true freshman who is bound for greatness here in Aggieland. He will be threatening T-Murph's status when his eligibility comes to an end.

Riley is a chain-moving possession receiver (probably the best hands of the bunch) and DeQawn Mobley is a Juco transfer who didn't get into the action as much as I thought he would this year.

I should point out that of our WRs Murphy, Carter, Riley, and Chad Schroeder (who is one of our deep route WRs) were all QBs either in HS or during some point in time here at A&M and Coach Fran loves to use their assets (Carter and Schroeder have both thrown for a TD this year).

I think the one thing that sets A&M & Tennessee apart is our turnover margin. A&M has turned the ball over 8 times all season (3 INT and 5 fumbles) while taking the ball away 22 times (13 INTs and 9 fumble recoveries) for a +14. Tennessee is +1 with 15 INTs thrown and 7 fumbles lost and 15 defensive INTs and 8 fumbles recovered.

As it has in every single one of A&M's games this year, the team with the most takeaways will takeaway the W.

Welcome one and all.

Most of you have heard me say (or read me say) that I didn't follow football at all until I stepped foot onto campus at A&M. The only two non-Westfield HS games (Go Mustangs!) that I had been to were both Rice Owls games back when I was in middle school and the only two Aggie Football games I had seen on TV were the '99 texas game (which is what sealed the deal in my collegiate decision process) and the '99 Alamo Bowl. In fact, I have yet to attend an NFL game even though I've lived my entire non-undergrad life in an NFL city (Ok, to be exact there were a few years between the Oilers and the Texans).

Despite my non-football background, every subsequent summer I get a stronger itch for Aggie football to start. To be quite honest, it's now surpassed the excitement level I feel when MLB or even Aggie baseball starts up in the spring. It was as if I had a blood transfusion when I signed up for my classes during freshman orientation.

I have missed only one home game since the start of the 2000 season and have road tripped to several away games. I just can't explain the passion that I have towards Aggie Football but it is amazing....and I can say that even after a huge portion of my experience coincided with one of the worst 4 year stretches of Ag football in recent memory (2000-2003).

I do need to warn you that while I have become obsessed with the college game I don't know a whole bunch about the Xs & Os of football, nor claim to, but I will give you my best analysis from one Aggie fan's stand point. In other words, I am not a professional scout or a team reporter but I, like thousands of other Aggies, live and die with Aggie football each and every Saturday (and random Thursday nights).

Schedule

Coming into 2005 A&M is getting more media attention than I've ever experienced while I've been here. We certainly took our licks in 2003 but recovered nicely in 2004 against the #3 toughest schedule in the nation. I like to think about it this way....we lost 5 games and 3 of those were against BCS bound teams and another was to Tennessee in the Cotton Bowl (and they're a consensus Top 4 team going into this season). I chalk the Baylor game up to whatever causes Haley's Comet to occur, the sky to be blue, and t-sips to be weird.

This season our schedule eases up slightly, but only because Florida State decided to back out of our deal leaving us scrambling to find a replacement (SMU). I'm still mad about those cowards for that.

Starting the season on the road at Death Valley is going to be tough but if we can get through that we should be 4-0 going into Colorado, which will be our next significant test. Oklahoma State & Kansas State are both down this year and ISU isn't any better than they were last year when we throttled them at their place. The big test is that final 3 game stretch.....@texas tech, @OU, and hosting texas. I think it is certainly possible to come out of those 3 games 2-1 so you can see why many have us targeted as the national black horse.

If I had to put a "Biggest game" label on any single game I'd say it's the texas tech game at Lubbock. Obviously, winning at Clemson & at Colorado are very important and the texas game is huge and the OU game is huge but a win at Jones Stadium would be such a big boost for the team going into the final two games that I think College Station would just about explode.

If you had to pin me down with a realistic regular season W-L record that I would have to put money on, I'd go with 8-3....losing one of Clemson/CU & two of the final 3....although 9-2 is certainly within reach.

The road schedule is going to be the key for the Ags.....win on the road and we're going to a big bowl game.

Offense

The offense should be exciting to watch. The only players we are losing are WR Terrence Murphy, OL Geoff Hangartner, & FB Keith Joseph.

#1 Reggie McNeal. It is quite certain that Reggie is the explanation point on the "low digit" offensive theme we seem to have going (I'll explain in a minute).

Going into 2004 Reggie was all potential and was basically living off of the 2002 upset of OU. There were even internet whispers that true freshman, Stephen McGee, would take over the QB roll before the season's end. Last season during my preview I wrote the following:

Aggie fans across the nation hope that Reggie McNeal finally becomes the complete package that he was advertised as when he came to A&M as one of our greatest recruits ever. Thus far in his career he has been extremely inconsistent, with the high being his freshman season upset over #1 Oklahoma.

I've always thought that Reggie has tremendous potential but he hasn't put it all together after his first 2 seasons. He has had a tendency in the past to throw behind receivers or even hit them in the back of the helmet, so hopefully during his injury down time he's been able to work on his timing and reading the defense. Coach Fran has said good things about his progress mentally, but I can't imagine a coach saying the opposite about his starting QB.

On the other hand, Reggie is definitely one of our guys that I would classify as a "playmaker". I think that in order for us to win we have our playmakers get as many touches with the football as possible because anything can happen when they're involved....

Well, Reggie did every single thing I hoped he would. He was the only QB in the nation to pass for >220 yd/g & rush for 50 yd/g, finishing 7th in total offense. He was also tied with #1 overall draft pick, Utah's Alex Smith, & Bowling Green's Omar Jacobs as the only QBs to throw for >2,500 yards with only 4 INTs. He also finished as the 3rd best rushing QB in the nation and he out threw each of the other two by more than 500 yards. He finished the season as a semi-finalist for the Davey O'Brien Award.

He is the top true dual-threat QB in the nation and has been placed on the Maxwell Award Watch List for the upcoming season.

Basically, Reggie's 2004 season was the single greatest season by a QB in A&M history and he is well on his way to leaving here as the greatest QB ever.

Just looking at Reggie you can see a significant physical change as he has filled out. We all know that he has spent over 230 hours in workouts, has done almost 2,000 speed and agility drills, and completed over 17,000 reps in the weight room....that helps a lot. You can see the difference here or by looking at the picture of him in the '02 OU game and the "bust shot" of him at the top of the section.

What is even more astonishing than his physical progression is the actual progression of his game. AlalogyAg (from over at TexAgs.com) took a look at that progression (I put it into chart form so it reads easier):

I think it's safe to say that there won't be such a huge improvement from his Jr to Sr season as there was between his So to Jr, but if he can just maintain the same ratios as he had last year we will be in GREAT shape.

I suppose I should mention our QBs not named Reggie.

Junior #19 Ty Branyon is a former walk-on who played very well in the few opportunities he had in 2004 although he just doesn't look like a DI athlete when he's out there....more robotic.

RS-F #15 Stephen McGee is the future for us when Reggie's eligibility comes to an end. He graduated high school a semester early so he has been with the program for two summers, two springs, and a fall before his 4 years of eligibility even start. Coach Fran doesn’t have an official #2 & #3....he's going to play each in different situations (probably McGee in blowout situations and Branyon in important game situations). That isn't official either.

Wide Receivers/Tight Ends


5/8th of the Aggie's Receiving Attack (L-R: Taylor, Carter, Franks, Mobley, & Schroeder)

Losing T-Murph sucks but entering the 2005 season we could have one of the most plentiful (and underrated) stable of WRs in the nation....#7 Jason Carter, #8 Kerry Franks, #14 Chad Schroeder, #9 DeQawn Mobley, #2 Earvin Taylor, #6 Pierre Brown....as a group an almost perfect combination of speed, sure hands, chain movers, and play makers. I wouldn't say that we have a single superstar wideout in the bunch but this group epitomizes the philosophy, the sum of the parts is greater than the whole.

It's also exciting to think that Carter, Schroeder, Brown were all prep QBs....We've already seen Carter & Schroeder both get into the action on trick plays.

I do have some bad news though. Just last week I had to delete an entire paragraph of this preview regarding how I thought senior #17 L'Tydric Riley was going to have a big breakout season because he tore his ACL in his left knee during practice. Riley was our 3rd down go-to-guy with the big soft hands and it's a big loss that would be a HUGE loss if we didn't have the good depth at WR. It could be a blessing in disguise down the road considering he had his redshirt almost inexplicably pulled during his freshman season so he could record 1 reception. RS-F #4 Keith Dickerson suffered the same fate as Riley going down in mid-August with a torn ACL in his right knee.

I now need to mention another youngster who will more likely contribute after the summer injuries....true freshman #5 Howard Morrow, who by choosing to wear #5 is almost a default favorite player of mine. The rumors are swirling regarding whether we red-shirt Morrow or not....my stance on it is if he will help us win in 2005 then he should plays in 2005....especially with the losses of Riley & Dickerson. Feel free to feel differently.

Mobley will be our go-to guy this year picking up T-Murph's receptions from last year and I think that Taylor will be important in moving the chains for us with his sure hands. Schroeder can flat out fly on the deep routes as does Franks and they provide a little fun. Schroeder had 4 receptions in 2004 for 135 yards and 2 TDs (both with him streaking down the field), missing a third by mere inches on a hailmary that would have won the OU game....he also threw for a TD. Jason Carter is the wild card of the bunch....thankfully, he is back for his fourth season after coming to A&M as a partial qualifier. He is certainly a playmaker but he just hasn't had that big breakout season that I've been expecting the last two seasons. I love JC regardless....he is always the first one into the end zone to congratulate a teammate even if he was on the sidelines for that play and he was the one quoted as repeating the line, "Aggies never quit" during the horrible 2003 Nebraska game during the horrible 2003 season.

What is almost more exciting than our WR bunch is our new tight end, #3 Martellus Bennett. 'Tellus was named the #1 recruit in the state of Texas and the #1 TE in the nation for good reason....the boy is 6'7" and 248 lbs. It is going to be awesome to watch defenses try and find someone to defend that size and even if they can defend him it's going to open up opportunities for Reggie to find one of those many WRs.

Coach Fran has made some adjustments, including more 2 and 3 TE sets, to not only get Martellus involved in the offense but increase the roles of #88 Boone Stutz, #81 Joey Thomas, #87 Quinlin Germany, & RS-F #86 Amos Gbunblee when they lineup at TE.

Running Backs


Junior tailback Courtney Lewis

Our rushing game is led by junior #25 Courtney Lewis, although Reggie was right on his heels last season. Courtney took an ever-so-slight step backwards last year after an impressive Freshman All-American season in 2003.

After the fact it became known that C-Lew played most of the season injured which led to the decrease in his numbers. Courtney is fully healthy again and I expect another big season out of #25.

#24 Chris Alexander will step fulltime into the fullback role now that Chief Joseph graduated. I really like Chris and while I'm not expecting big numbers, he is a very productive player when he doesn't have the ball in his hands.

#21 Brandon Leone has moved from defensive back to tailback this offseason and is said to be our #2 on the depth chart. He played RB in high school so it isn't a completely new position for him. He did sustain an injury during summer practice (I've read it was to his hamstring) and he should miss a couple games at the beginning of the year.

Speaking of HS RBs I need to mention our true freshman RB/FB, #11 Jorvorskie Lane (make sure you get that spelling correct -- there is no "a" in Jorvorskie). Lane is pretty much a physical carbon copy of my boy, Ja'Mar Toombs coming into school as a 5'11" 235 lb., nationally recruited, freshman tailback/fullback. I can only hope he makes some better decisions than Toombs. I expect to see Lane get some playing time this year.

His actual ability aside, I love the fact that you can substitute Jorvorskie Lane for Bill Brasky and the skits still sound mythical.

Offensive Line

The Oline is our biggest concern on the offensive side of the ball. They played well for most of the season but we were physically mismatched against our top opponent's Dlines (Utah, texas, Tennessee).

We return 4 of our starters (#75 Jami Hightower, #64 Kirk Elder, #76 Aldo De La Garza, & #51 Chris Yoder), losing only Hangartner, with a couple of younger guys vying for a starting job over the incumbent (#71 Yemi Babaloa, #70 Cody Wallace). From what I've read, Wallace has the nod over Yoder at the moment but he or Yoder could take Aldo's spot if Aldo slips up. I've also read that #54 Corey Clark is expected to get the first shot at replacing Hangartner as the strong tackle.

Overall

All I can say to our defensive opponents is, "Watch out for the low digits!" #1, #2, #3, #5, #6, #7, #8, #9,, #11,& #14.....plus #24 & #25."

Special Teams

Special teams are probably the most overlooked part of the game by casual fans. I'm not sure I understand this because field position is so important to a team's success. Just think back to 2003 when we couldn't cleanly catch a punt, let-alone return one.

Well, in 2004 we really didn't play all that great either. The only team in the nation that was worse than us returning kicks was Eastern Michigan. On top of that, while our punt returning did improve we were still 97th nationally.

Unfortunately, the only two guys who returned punts for us last year (Erik Mayes returned 20 & T-Murph had one) are gone.....not that they were spectacular but it would be nice to at least have some experience. Tydrick Riley was supposed to fill the role until his knee injury as was Bryant Singleton who didn't qualify academically this year so now I believe it will be baseball phenom #5 Jordan Chambless. I only hope he doesn't hurt his right arm.

On the other side of special teams, we will have a new punter taking over the job. It will be either true freshman #44 Justin Brantly or #27 RS-F Richie Bean.

Punting was not an especially strong point for us last season.

Now to the kicking game.

Todd Pegram will be our senior kicker. Todd is a solid kicker but certainly not a Mike Nugent.

As you can see Todd is money inside the 30 but struggles from 30-39 yards. You can see that we aren't letting Todd kick the long FGs (if you just said he was 2-for-3 from 40-49 in 2002 then his FG% would jump to 73%).

AnalogyAg tackled the job of looking at the affect Pegram's leg had on our 2004 squad. He found that we were only faced with a 4th down situation where a 40-50 yard FG would be necessary....we kicked it twice and made them both. The other two were 4th and 1 where we went for it but failed to convert (one was on the 32 yd line and the other was on the 26). Basically, Pegram not being able to kick the ball a mile was not a big factor for us last year.

Defense

This year is very different from last year. In our first game against Utah we started only 4 defensive players who had more than 7 previous starts....3 had never started a game. 11 defensive players made their first DI appearance in that game.

This year we are returning every starter minus our two cornerbacks and our DE.

Defensive Line

I'm excited about our DLine. We have #97 Johnny Jolly & #85 Red Bryant as our starting tackles with #89 Jason Jack & #92 Chris Harrington as our starting ends. Also, RS-F #49 Cyril Obiozor will back up Harrington after being named to the 2nd Team Redshirt Freshman All-American team by CollegeFootballNews.com.

Bryant & Jack were both Freshman All-Americans following their 2004 campaigns and Chris Harrington was on the depth chart behind NFL-bound Mike Montgomery although he was a part of the rotation seeing action in all 12 games. Jolly was named to 2nd team All Big XII and will be the senior leader of the line.

I'm expecting big things from this group and I don't think they'll let me down.

Linebackers

We are returning all of our LBing crew. They aren't a unit that reminds us of the days of the Blitz Brothers but they are a veteran group. As it stands right now according to our depth chart #31 Archie McDaniel will start at rover, #10 Justin Warren will start at MLB and #57 Lee Foliaki will start at SLB. Backing them up will be #29 Stephen Hodge, #42 Nurahda Manning, & #43 Renuel Greene, respectively. Only Warren, a junior, and Hodge, a sophomore, are not seniors.

Ag LB Leader, Justin Warren

Justin Warren is going to be a star. Not only does he look like a LBer should but he makes the plays. He can also play strongside or a rover when we play out of nickel packages.

Warren was interviewed for Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine and had a couple of quotes that Ags have to love reading:

"I've studied the history of the great linebackers who were here before me," Warren said. "There have been guys like Quentin Coryatt, Dat Nguyen, Aaron Wallace, and the list goes on. They played the game with passion, and the Wrecking Crew was built around them. I hope one day I can be mentioned somewhere down in the same paragraph with those guys."

....

"Sure, I want to see the defensive ranking improve," Warren said. "But I also want to see the style and energy improve. It would definitely be nice to get the Wrecking Crew title back, and it would be even better to play this year the way that some of the great A&M defenses have in the past. When our fans watch our defense, we want them to experience a trip back in time."

Defensive Backs


Jaxson Appel

Our safeties are solid, if not great. Preseason All-American, #19 Jaxson Appel, is cemented as our FS and #28 Japhus Brown, a Freshman All-American a year ago, is our starting SS. I'm not worried about these guys. Jaxson has led the Ags in tackles in each of the last two seasons and if he turns the trick again then he will be one of three Ag defenders in Aggie football history joining Dat Nguyen and Ed Simonini. Obviously that would leave him as the only DB to do such. #5 Jordan Chambless & #18 Melvin Bullitt will back-up our starters.

Our cornerbacks are the unit of our defense that scares me. Byron Jones and Jonte Buhl both graduated and Erik Mayes, who would be a sophomore, is not returning after a very solid RS-F season.

Coach Fran has named #20 Brock Newton & #23 Ronald Jones as our starters for Clemson because they are the only two CBs we have that have played a DI game. I remember not being too excited when they entered the games last year but they could very well have improved since the Cotton Bowl.

#4 Danny Gorrer was named to the 1st team Redshirt Freshman All-American team by CollegeFootballNews.com, which is great but he has still never played a DI snap. I have no doubt that will be a stud but inexperience there could be dangerous. #13 Marquis Carpenter is a SO-TR who will see a large portion of playing time this year.

Due to the lack of depth we have five true freshman vying for time [Arkeith Brown, Chevar Bryson, Alton Dixon, Jordan Peterson, & former Westfield HS WHS kid Devin Gregg]- Fran has said that one of those 5 will definitely play this year and 2 others might play with the others RSing.

Clemson Preview

As it stands right now, I don't have the time to put together a big Clemson preview. I had collected some quotes, links and pictures over the last few weeks to help me do this so I'm just going to share a couple of them with you.


Mr. Jad Dean (note he will wear #7 for 2005)

Fall camp has taken its toll on Jad Dean's right leg. Dean, the Tigers' starting place-kicker, said his leg has been sore this week after 21 practices.

"Right now is when it gets a little tough, because the whole right side of my leg is sore," he said. "I've been kicking every single day for 21/2 straight weeks out here in the heat, not to mention doing conditioning.

The rest of my body isn't tired, but my right leg takes all the toll out there."

After being criticized by Bowden the first week of camp, Dean went on to make eight of 10 kicks in the Tigers' three scrimmages. Dean, who was 12 of 15 on field goals in 2004, said he'll try to rest his leg between now and the Sept. 3 opener against Texas A&M.

"I'm trying to limit my kicks, and hopefully I'll get my leg back before Texas A&M," he said. "Right now it doesn't have as much pop in it as it usually would."

Bowden named 12 players when asked how many freshmen could play against A&M: receivers Tyler Grisham and Rendrick Taylor, tailback James Davis, cornerbacks Haydrian Lewis and McElrathbey, linebackers Antonio Clay and Josh Miller, safety Sadat Chambers, offensive tackle Cory Lambert, center Barry Humphries, defensive end Phillip Merling, and defensive tackle Jock McKissic.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I welcome you all to one of my favorite times of the year....the start of college football season. More specifically, the start of the Fightin' Texas Aggie football season.

I will start off this season preview as I have my previous season previews....with a little insight into my background as an Ag football fan. Most of you have heard me say (or read me say) that I didn't follow football at all until I stepped foot onto campus at A&M. The only two non-Westfield HS games (Go Mustangs!) that I had been to were Rice Owls games back when I was in middle school. The only two Aggie Football games I had seen on TV were the '99 texas game and the '99 Alamo Bowl. The '99 t.u. game is what sealed the deal in my collegiate decision process. Even though I've lived in Houston for my entire non-undergrad life I've never even been to an NFL game.

Despite my non-football background, every subsequent summer I get a stronger itch for Aggie football to start. To be quite honest, it has now surpassed the excitement level that builds when MLB or even Aggie baseball starts up in the spring.

I really loved going to football games my freshman year but it wasn't until after I started working for the athletic department as an attendance checker that I really started getting into it. It was different watching the games in '01 after I knew a chunk of the players.

Picking up NCAA Football 2002 for my PS2 helped accelerate everything....as did NCAA Football 2003, NCAA Football 2004, NCAA Football 2005, NCAA Football 2006....

Going into what will be my 7th football season as a student, I have missed only two home game since the start of the 2000 season and have road tripped to several away games. I missed the '04 OU game due to a friend's wedding and the '05 Texas State game thanks to Hurricane Rita.

Someone asked what Aggie football meant to me and this is what I had to tell them:

To me it's something that year in and year out I continue to become more passionate about.

I love going to Kyle Field with my friends (or family) and just going nuts. I love that we, as fans, can actually influence the results on the field with our enthusiasm.

I read Rammer Jammer Yellow Hammer by Warren St. John and he put it better than I could:

"On third down, as the State quarterback approaches the line, there is a sudden roar. It sounds like a massive waterfall, with the steady rumble of stomping feet on the low end and a singeing hiss of clapping hands on the high. My screams fill in the midrange. What am I saying? I have to stop to even notice: Comonbamaletsgodefensegobamagobamagodefense. Gibberish, in other words. And yet, who can tell, or cares? With the sudden spike in noise, the crowd seems to become aware of itself and of its power. It's exhilarating, and the exhilaration inspires us to scream even louder. A moment later, it happens again, as though the crowd is in a shouting match with itself. It's louder still. The decibel level ratchets upward--a graph of it would look like a staircase--McDougall's theory of intensification playing out in real time. Unnerved by the noise, a State lineman hops out of his stance--illegal motion. Our power is confirmed, and that's all it takes...The Bulldogs break the huddle and the roar begins anew, only still louder. Around me, fans are screaming and shaking their heads, mouths open, trying to muscle still more noise from the bottom of their throats, as though trying to shout rocks up a hill. I can feel the rumble through my heels. The State quarterback drops back and jogs right, under pressure. He throws the ball into his receiver's ankles, incomplete. It's our ball. We did it."
The crowd can become aware of it's self and to be a part of that is an awesome feeling (in the truest sense of the word). What an incredible rush, knowing that you're more than just a person in the stadium watching the game....you're actually contributing to the outcome on the field. The crowd is what makes the game so great. The greatest games I've been to at Kyle Field weren't even all wins....I remember those electric losses more than I remember most of our blowout wins.

That is why people are sports fans. I truly think that whatever it is that flows through your body during these moments of euphoria are like a drug and make you crave more....you need more and are willing to go through just about anything to get another fix. You live through all the bad and all the agony that comes with defeat to feel that feeling. And going through all that defeat and agony makes those great moments even sweeter.

Where else on earth can you completely release your feelings in such a primal way? I mean, after a big play I can simply howl at the top of my lungs for a good minute, just letting the joy spill out of my body.

That's what is so incredible about college sports. Think about how soccer fans in Europe go crazy....it's similar to collegiate athletics in that you are so completely committed to your team because you can't just pick and choose your team as the seasons go by....I'm an Aggie and no matter how much I like another college's sporting team there is nothing that they could do that could come close to the bond I have formed with my school.

It's that total release that you get that makes being a sports fan what it truly is. There simply aren't other outlets like that in our lives.

Aggie football gives me that.

I do need to warn you that while I have become obsessed with the college game I don't know a whole bunch about the Xs & Os of football, nor claim to, but I will give you my best analysis from one Aggie fan's stand point. In other words, I am not a professional scout or a team reporter but I, like thousands of other Aggies, live and die with Aggie football each and every Saturday.

Schedule

For the first time since I've been at school we don't have a single big name non-conference opponent on the schedule. We haven't had a weaker non-conference schedule since '99 (La-Tech, Tulsa, S.Miss) or '97 (Sam Houston, La-Lafayette, N.Texas). There is certainly an argument that can be made for this year's schedule being weaker than either of those two.

The best part of this schedule is how fan friendly the schedule is. We play seven games at Kyle Field and three games within a 3 hour drive of College Station (Army, Baylor, & texas). That means that I will be able to attend 10 of our 12 regular season games missing only the Kansas game and the Oklahoma State game.

The weak non-conference schedule makes me nervous because we won't have a true concept of how good (or bad) we really are until we play texas tech in our 5th game of the season. We're going to feel very confident after our first four games and we, as fans, will start getting ahead of ourselves. It happened in '04 coming off of the Colorado win and it happened again in '05 coming off of the SMU win. Remember our guys should look good playing in those first four games. We should be pressuring the QB, and making big plays on offense. If we're not (ala. '05 Texas State) then we should realize there is some sort of problem. The real season starts on September 9th and I'm going to try to look at everything up to that point as preseason.

Also worth noting, we don't play a true road game until October 7th when we travel to Kansas.

I suppose I could look at it differently and say we have 4 games to get our defense adjusted to a new defensive coordinator and a new system and for our offense to get things rolling with a new starter at QB.

I still feel like I need to be cautious.

The other thing that worries me is that we don't have a single bye week until after week 11, just before the Lonestar Showdown. That is 11 games in 11 weeks which will really put pressure on our depth chart because guys won't have much time to heal up nicks and bruises.

We should be 4-0 going into the tech game. Thankfully, 3 of our 4 big games this year will be at Kyle Field as we host tech, Nebraska, and OU but travel to Austin. If they were away I would mark us down for 0-4 in that stretch but Kyle Field tends to have a way of leveling the playing field somewhat when we're underdogs.

Baylor has played us tough in the last two seasons but still, they are still 1-20 against us since '85. The key game of the season will once again be texas tech. If we come away from that game with a win then we will be 5-0 and should be favored at Kansas. If we win that tech game there is a chance of getting into November with a very nice record. Of course we always seem to lose a game we shouldn't and from the stretch of Kansas, Mizzou, OkSt, & Baylor I wouldn't be shocked if we drop one, especially with 3 of those games on the road (don't forget that we are 3-13 away from Kyle Field under Fran)

Coach Fran will be under the microscope in virtually every game this year and cannot afford to lose any of those games that we will be favored in.

As for future schedules I don't know what to expect, ones as weak as this or ones like we've had in recent years with one marquee nonconference opponent on it. Coach Fran was quoted in the Eagle as saying:

Down the road, Franchione would like to play Notre Dame or possibly UCLA in the Rose Bowl. "Those games are good for recruiting," he said. "They're [also] good for the fans."
As far as I know, we still have Miami on schedule for '07 & '08 but Air Force and Michigan State have backed out from their series (I can't remember when Air Force was scheduled but I think Michigan State was in '09 & '10). I really don't mind playing patsies as long as we have one marquee non-conference game each year....and Army doesn't count as a marquee opponent.

Coach Fran


I love that jacket....if only we could get him a new belt

2006 is going to be HUUUUUGE for Coach Fran because Lord knows he is on the hot seat. I for one, and I know I'm part of a shrinking group, am giving Fran the benefit of the 2006 season before he loses me. I said a long time ago that I would give him until his first recruiting class gets through the system before I made my final decision and I'm sticking with my words.

Obviously, things haven't gone the way we hoped. There was the down right worse than horrible 4-8 2003, including 77-0. Fran lost a chunk of Ags after that game who, regardless of what happens next, will never stop holding that against him.

In 2004 we had a nice little 7-4 regular season against what would be one of the most difficult schedules in the nation. Three of those four losses were to BCS teams (Utah, texas, & OU). We got beat up in the Cotton Bowl (our biggest bowl game since the '99 Sugar Bowl) but fans were upbeat about future.

Last year we took a big step backwards going 5-6 and the fire turned up a notch on the seat Fran is sitting on. There were all sorts of rumors that there was a split amongst the players and some of our upperclassmen had basically quit on Fran. Whatever it was, we were bad. Really, our offense wasn't too bad especially considering the injuries it sustained to key guys. The defense, however, was right there in the category of "worst in school history".

This season I'm expecting at least 8 wins. That is what it is going to take for me and even then it's going to depend on how we looked (I'm tired of blowouts). If we lose to Baylor, or any of the first 4 games I might be out before the season is over. I don't know how I would feel if we lost to one of those five but beat texas or OU. That too would probably depend on how I felt we played. If we go 8-5 I'll take the same approach into next season raising the bar a little.

One difference I noticed from '04 to '05 was that in '04 team unity was stressed at almost every opportunity. Maybe it was stressed to the team in '05, I don't know, but if it was the media certainly didn't play it out like they did in '04. It seems like they're humming up the "team chemistry" motto for the '06 season.

The one final thing I wanted to mention in this section is that Fran made some coaching changes this off season. He fired defensive coordinator Carl Torbush, hired Gary Darnell to fill that role. I believe that it is this hiring that will decide Fran's future in Aggieland. Fran also brought in CB coach Van Malone, safeties coach Bill Clay, and WR coach Bob DeBesse. Pope moved from WR coach to RB coach to make room for DeBesse and fill the hole that previous RB coach Lee Fobbs left when he took the HC job at North Carolina A&T State University.

Offense

With Reggie McNeal getting hurt, the second half of last year's OU game ushered in the new era as Stephen McGee took the reigns joining Jorvorskie Lane, & Martellus Bennett becoming the new dangerous threesome to worry opponents. This year we get back some injured players and add an exciting new running back to the stable so I'm really looking forward to seeing how the offense looks.

As much as people complained about last year's offense, we were really potent. We had the 2nd best total offense average in school history and the 7th most prolific scoring offense in school history. I don't think anyone can complain about that.

Even so, I don't think we ran the offense that was best fit to Reggie last year with the zone-read. I felt that Reggie was at his best when he dropped back to pass and ran when he was flushed out of the pocket (a.k.a. scrambling). I was really down on Fran as the season went on because it seemed as if he kept going further and further away from what I thought was our bread and butter.

He was asked the same thing and answered in one of his weekly "Friday With Fran" articles this off season.

....we are not an option offense. We are an offense that runs some option. Last year with most of our best receivers hurt, in order to move the football effectively later in the season, the option became our best method.

....

We look to have 60-40 to 50-50 in running and throwing – and it doesn’t matter which is 60, depending on what the opponent is giving us on defense – and we have made a commitment to the zone-read, which is a good off-tackle play vs. all defenses.

As much "coach speak" as Fran gives us, I actually buy into that answer. Remember that we had about a jillion of our wideouts down due to injury, including 3 of our 4 top pass catchers (L'Tydrick Riley, Chad Schroeder, & Earvin Taylor). We started running the ball a little more and kept with it as long as it was successful. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. In the process the legend of Jorvorskie Lane began.

Quarterbacks

The biggest change in the offense from last year to this year is the starting quarterback.

Reggie left Aggieland with his name splattered across the record books but at the same time under a lot of criticism for the lack of success we had last year. I argued that most of the problems we had in the win column was a result of the defense. While I argued that, others argued that it was a lack of leadership that hurt us. I have no doubts that played a part but I think it was more the defense.

In McNeal's absence in the last 6 quarters of last year we got our first real taste of Stephen McGee. Regardless of his passing or running ability there are no doubts in my mind that exhibited a level of leadership I haven't seen on the field since I've been here. This leadership, his ability to run the option, and his recent number change (from #15 to #7) have led whisperings of the next Bucky Richardson.

McGee is really interesting because just about everyone came away from the texas game and the second half of the OU game feeling great about our future at QB. He has been in the program now for 3 springs, 3 summers, and will be heading into his 3rd fall as he enrolled in school before the spring of 2004 which netted him that extra spring and summer of practice.

In his first three appearances against opposing defenses he threw the ball very well completing 3-of-3 against SMU, 9-of-15 at Colorado, & 3-of-3 against Oklahoma State for a total of 200 yards and a completion percentage of a whopping 71.4% in those games. However, against Iowa State he was 0-of-3, at OU he was 0-of-6, and against texas he was 9-of-23 for a total of 83 yards and a completion percentage of only 28.1% in those three games. You have to admit, that is slightly concerning.

Earlier this summer when Jennifer was out of town I went back and watched each of the 175 snaps McGee took last year and charted the results of each of those. I had a detailed play-by-play excel document but when my computer crashed a couple of weekends ago I lost it. Thankfully, I had already uploaded the following chart and written a large portion of this section so it was preserved.

The one thing that I am pleased to see from that list is he knows not to force things as 6 of his 29 INC passes were throwaways (21%). He's a smart kid and we know that turnovers are the key to winning ballgames (I'll redive into this issue later this week) so as long as he keeps throwing the ball away instead of forcing a bad pass I think we should be solid in the turnover game.

Now regardless of those mixed results we know he has the ability to throw the ball. His junior and senior years at Burnet HS he threw the ball better than I do than when no one is looking at the golf course. Burnet went 28-2 those two years with him at the helm.

He finished his high school career with 8,256 yards passing and a 3A record 101 TD passes. While that is clearly not against DI opponents we know that he has the ability to throw the ball.

As we all saw in the OU and texas games, Stephen might not run a 4.3 like Reggie could but he runs the option very well. He picked up 235 yards on only 43 carries (for a whopping 5.5 ypc).

God help poor Stephen McGee if he doesn't quickly live up to the god status that has grown over the off-season in the minds of hungry fans. As hungry as some of our fans are it seems that if he gets picked twice in a ballgame he'll get dumped on just like Reggie. As fans we just need to keep in mind that he has one career start under his belt and that he isn't going to come out of the gate like a Heisman winner. We'll endure some growing pains but in the end I think this kid is going to finish his career with a lot of fans in his corner.

Senior Ty Branyon is our backup with RS-F Jamie McCoy and true freshman Jerrod Johnson coming after that.

Running Backs

We are going to run the snot out of the ball.

We finished 2005 with the 11th best rushing offense in the country and I don't see us spiraling away from that in '06.

Courtney Lewis had a rough year from a health standpoint but in his absence Jorvorskie Lane stepped in and then stepped all over our opponents. Add to that tandem the #4 running back recruit in the country, in Michael Goodson, and you get an idea of why I'm optimistic about our running game.

I have read in several places that RS-F Keondra Smith played well in the spring and summer and should get some carries and obviously Michael Goodson will get some as well. It's going to be a crowded backfield but that's ok with me....it eases my mind what with C-Lew's health. Fran has said that we'll line up in more 2-back sets this year than last year as a result of our depth at running back.

I think it's really great that our top 2 backs averaged over 5 yards per carry. I took a look at C-Lew's last 34 carries of the year (his last 4 games) and he ran for an average of 10.74 yards per carry. That's crazy. Over those same 4 games Jorvorskie ran the ball 48 times for an average of 5.46 yards per carry. The amazing thing was that was against texas, OU, tech, & ISU. We have the perfect "thunder-and-lightning" tandum in our backfield.

Another interesting note is that on Jorvorskie's 9 TD runs he averaged only 2 yards/carry (five of them were 1 yard runs) which hurt his overall yards/carry because he simply couldn't run for more than 1 yard. If you took those 9 runs out of his totals his average jumps up 6% from 5.0 to 5.3.

Chris Alexander will be our starting fullback and is a guy I really like. He blocks well but can still handle the rock when he gets it.

Courtney Lewis is quietly moving up some of our all-time rushing lists. Discovering this caught me somewhat off-guard but it is interesting. It would take a Heisman effort for him to take the top spots in most of these categories but it is very likely that C-Lew, if healthy, finishes in the top 5 of all three of these categories.

He ran for a career low 723 yards last year on 109 attempts with 7 TDs. If he duplicates those low numbers he would finish 4th in career rushing yards, 7th in career rushing attempts, and 3rd in career TDs. That is if he duplicates his worst season.

Schroeder Makes A Circus Catch Against Baylor

Last year I boasted about how plentiful our stable of WRs was. I can only imagine how bad we would have been if we weren't as deep as we were. We lost three of our top four WRs to season ending injuries (Chad Schroeder, Earvin Taylor, Keith Dickerson & L'Tydric Riley) leaving Jason Carter and a very shaky DeQawn Mobley as our only experienced wideouts.

Well, we return everyone except Carter and Mobley including Kerry Franks, Pierre Brown, and Howard Morrow (and the other guys I mentioned above).

Riley and Taylor are our sure handed chain movers while Schroeder and Morrow are our big play guys. Schroeder started last season like nothing I've ever seen before scoring TDs on his first 5 touches (he finished the year with 6 TDs on 21 touches).

Morrow, in my opinion, is going to be a star. He was a true freshman last year and didn't get many balls thrown his way but he made two incredible plays that stand out in my mind. In the Texas State game he recorded his first career reception on an incredible 41 yard diving catch to put us inside the 10 yard line (vid). The second big play I remember was in the OU game just before halftime as we were marching down the field trying to bring the game within 7 points. He caught the ball, turned and ran for the first down but had to flip over the defender to move the chains (vid). He had six receptions on the year and two of them were spectacular enough for me to remember them. I'm feeling big things coming from #5.

It's also exciting to think that Riley, Schroeder, & Brown were all prep QBs. We know that Fran isn't afraid to use stuff like that to our advantage as we've seen Schroeder and Jason Carter (former QB turned WR) get into the action on trick plays. It's always something to keep an eye on in big games.

Moving on to the tight ends, we have Joey Thomas and Martellus Bennett. Tellus (who will wear #13 this season) started a little rough last year dropping a couple of passes really early on in the season but finished with a Freshman All-American season. When he got the ball you could see his athleticism and the potential he has and you just know he's going to get better as he continues to learn. The other aspect of Tellus's game is his blocking. He can really lay the wood.

Offensive Line

I don't know enough about the X's & O's to be able to speak about the Oline intelligently. I was concerned with them going into last season but we ran the ball well last year and return 4 of our 5 starters. Fran has said Yemi Babalola, Corey Clark, Kirk Elder and Cody Wallace will be starting and Grant Dickey, Chris Yoder, & Travis Schneider are in the mix for the other slot.

So. Justin Brantly

I'll start with my boy, Justin Brantly. Justin was a true freshman last season and set the school freshman punting record averaging 43.2 ypp and was named a Freshman All-American. It was the 9th best season in school history. I've got no concerns with punting. Justin did change his number from #44 to #16 this season.

The kicking game isn't quite as set in stone. We return Layne Neumann & Richie Bean and have incoming freshman Matt Szymanski all fighting for a spot. Szymanski graduated a year early from HS so he skipped his entire senior season. You can read all about his accolades from the post I put together a couple of weeks ago.

Bean has yet to kick a FG for us but here are Neumann's previous numbers:

Essentially, Layne has been used in situations where Todd Pegram was out of range. He is also 1-for-1 on PATs.

Kickoffs have been another issue from recent years, although contrary to internet fodder, Bean was actually OK last year.

Our leading punt returner from last year was Jordan Chambless with 8. He has given up football to concentrate on baseball. Chad Schroeder and Marquis Carpenter each returned 2 for a combined total of -2 yards. Schroeder is slated to be back there again along with Jordan Peterson. I wonder how many BCS conference schools have two white guys as their punt return squad?

We're in a similar boat with kick-returns as our leader from last year, Jason Carter, has moved onto the NFL. Kerry Franks had 5 with an average of 16.4 ypr and C-Lew had 5 with an average of 20.4. No one else had more than one. I've read that Pierre Brown and Kerry Franks are looking like our two guys but Goodson and Arkeith Brown are in the mix as well.

A final note regarding special teams is that our deep snapper from a year ago, Boone Stutz, has also moved on. We signed a HSer late named Corey Gibas and have two squads men on our roster (Chris Smith is one of them). That'll be something we need to keep an eye on because it could prove crucial in big situations.

Defense

Let's start by taking a look at the positive. It can't get any worse.

The problem with that is I'm not sure how many fans can withstand another defensive season like the one we had last year. Especially when you only have to look back 2 more years to find one that was equally bad. The scariest part of last year was that we returned 8 of our 11 starters from the year before.

This season we return another big chunk of players as we move into a new defensive formation (our third in the last 5 years). Coach Fran brought in Gary Darnell to run a 4-2-5 package as opposed to the 4-3 which is what we typically ran during the Torbush era. From everything I've read we made the change because our personnel fits this scheme better and it is better in defending one-back offenses, which is now more common in the spread out Big 12.

The biggest killer we had was third down conversions, and really this pertains to both sides of the ball for us.

Defensive Line

This is where it all starts. If we can't get pressure on the QB with our line then our DBs are left hanging out to dry.....see last year's results. We're returning 3 of our 4 DLmen with DT Johnny Jolly graduating and moving onto the NFL (Green Bay). DT Red Bryant and DE Jason Jack got most of the publicity going into last season and when healthy they played fairly well.

The guy I'm most excited about is DE Chris Harrington. Behind only Jolly, Harrington finished second in TFL and sacks (in what was his sophomore year).

I was also really impressed with DE Michael Bennett (Tellus's brother). He finished behind only Jolly and Harrington in TFL and sacks last year as a RS-F. I wouldn't be surprised to see him pushing for a lot more playing time at the expense of someone. I've read that Jason Jack has worked out at DT so if Bryce Reed isn't on his game I could see Jack moving over there and Bennett taking over for Jack.

I should re-mention that Will Morrissey is not on the roster this season for personal reasons. He was the #3 DT recruit in the country in '04.

Linebackers

This is one place that the 4-2-5 makes a big change because we play with one less LBer on the field.

Ag LB Leader, Justin Warren

Justin Warren is the easy pick for one of the spots. He led the team with 95 tackles last season even missing some time with an injury. On top of all that, he looks like a LBer should. Warren was one of the few bright spots from the miserable 2003 season because we could see the potential he had when he was starting as a true freshman. As a senior now, he is on all the preseason award watch lists and preseason All-Conference teams.

According to the depth chart he will be joined by JUCO transfer Mark Dodge. Dodge, for those of you living under a rock, is one of the more special stories of the season. He served in the U.S. Army for four years out of high school before picking up football again. He also served in the official ceremonial unit and escort to the President and was in the Pentagon on 9/11 during the terrorist attacks. Of all the schools for Dodge to come to, I don't think there is a single one that will appreciate and respect what he has already done in his life more than Texas A&M. I can already tell you that regardless of his play, he will leave Aggieland as a favorite player of many. If he plays well, he will leave Aggieland as the favorite player of all.

Just behind Dodge on the depth chart is Misi Tupe, another JUCO transfer and RS-F Matt Featherston. I envision Tupe contributing quite a bit this year and Featherston contributing a lot in the next couple of years.

Defensive Backs

We're going to start to see some more of our strong DB recruiting class from '05 this season.

Sophomore Danny Gorrer returns and according to the current depth chart will be accompanied by RS-F Jordan Peterson at CB. JR Marquis Carpenter, it appears, has been bumped down to the #3 guy on the depth chart. Arkeith Brown is also listed on the 2-deep.

Peterson has been getting rave reviews from teammates as well as some media sources. He can run and is out to prove all the stereotypes of a Caucasian CB wrong.

For the first time after what seems like a decade, we will not see Jaxson Appel at safety. My boy, Devin Gregg, will take over for Jaxson and start at free safety while Melvin Bullitt returns at strong safety. The backups include Alton Dixon, Stephen Hodge, and JUCO transfer Johnathan Batson.

I think that Devin Gregg is going to be a superstar. He played quite well as a true freshman last season after getting his RS pulled following injuries to safeties Jordan Chambless & Japhus Brown.

Speaking of Chambless, I mentioned it earlier but it's worth repeating....he has given up football to focus on baseball. Personally, I'm totally cool with that. However, with this announcement I had to update my "Favorite Aggie Football Players-Current" from my bio. Obviously Justin Brantly remains but I'm going to replace Chambless with Jorvorskie and add Devin Gregg and Howard Morrow. Just wanted to keep you all on the low down (down low....no doubt).

Now for the much talked about WHIP. Since we moved to the 4-2-5 we now have an extra DB on the field at the position of WHIP. The WHIP is essentially a weak side safety who is opposite the strong safety. I initially though that it was somewhat of a hybrid LBer/Safety but Bill Clay answered that question in one of the weekly Friday With Frans.

“The whip in our system is a safety. In some coverages, he plays down low like a linebacker. In some, he plays down low like a Nickel back. In some, he plays high like a safety.

“But he’s a safety. In substituting for the Nickel, it is based on coverage ability. You send in your third-best cover guy. He might be a corner, a safety, or even a linebacker, depending on what you’re trying to defend.”

The depth chart has Japhus Brown in the WHIP role with Chevar Brown and Brock Newton both backing him up. I'm hoping that Japhus has a great season similar to his freshman campaign and less like his injury plagued sophomore year.

Changes to Kyle Field

I know, I know. It's a travashamockery. But it happens so get over it.

Most noticeable will be our new jumbo-jumbo-tron. Technically, it's not a JumboTron (which I believe is made by Sony) but you get the idea (ours is made by Mitsubishi). At 3,954 square feet (~54' x 75') the screen is seven times larger than the old one and the second largest in collegiate sports. It is being called the 12th Man TV and you can read more about it here. I must say that I am kinda glad about this because the old screen was too small to see anything important (like the ball).

We have also moved the famous "Welcome to Aggieland" and "Home of the 12th Man" lettering on the student side as well as all of the letters from the former student side. "Welcome to Aggieland" has been moved to The Zone and the "Home of the 12th Man" has been moved up a section and, I believe, painted white. They moved the letting from the former student side outside the stadium in the north-west corner.

The reason for the move was to allow room for a ribbon board to wrap around the field. It is the largest ribbon board in collegiate sports and the 2nd largest in the US. It will host out of town scores as well as game stats from our game, which is something I've kinda wanted since I went to the Nebraska game in '03.

I'm really not all that upset, like many are, about them moving the lettering around. Frankly, it hasn't been in those spots for all that long as it was donated by the Class of '88.

Rule Changes

I noticed in the most recent Friday with Fran that there were going to be some rule changes this year, most noticeably with the instant replay and the clock:
One situation we won’t practice and we’ll work hard to avoid needing is kicking off and needing points with four seconds left in the game. With the one new rule that you fans will notice most, starting the clock when the ball is kicked and immediately when it is placed in play on changeovers, both hang time and an on-side kick in play would kill the clock. I’m not in favor of this rule because it doesn’t seem like it’s really going to cut that much significantly off of the game time.

The new rule I do like is that I will have one challenge, as long as we have a timeout left, to get a review on instant replay, and not lose the timeout if the call is reversed. That’s a positive way to improve the use of replay.
